Nate Silcox
20 years ago, I was a naive political science student at Lock Haven but thanks to the opportunities I received through LHU, connections I made along the way, and the good Lord putting me in the right place at the right time, I have achieved a measure of success in the realms of politics and public policy.
In 1991, I lost elections for SCC Vice-President and IFC President. The third time was the charm though as I was selected for the Harrisburg Internship Semester Program, where I interned for the President Pro Tempore of the Pennsylvania Senate. I always envisioned going to Washington to change the world, but I learned that Harrisburg -- close to my home -- offered promising careers as well.
After my internship, I returned to LHU and had one of the most rewarding experiences in my life leading KDR’s Alpha Alpha Chapter as Consul. Receiving National awards for Community Service and Campus Involvement was an affirmation of the work that we did. I also founded a College Republican Club that took me to the 1992 National Republican Convention in Houston.
After graduation, my Senate connections led to an internship at Republican State Committee. When Tom Ridge was elected Governor, I went to work for the Department of Education, where we set academic standards, held schools accountability for results, and created education options. I returned to the Senate – serving as Legislative Director for the Majority Caucus Secretary – shepherding several bills through the legislative process. In 1998, I was named Executive Director of the Local Government Committee, where I coordinated the passage of 11 bills and served as point-of-contact for Senate Republicans on municipal issues. I currently serve as Floor Assistant to the Senate Majority Whip focusing on education and local government issues.
Locally, I have been active in Republican politics, leading the County Young Republicans, serving as an elected Committeeman for my precinct, and chairing my municipal Republican Committee. This year, I had the honor of being appointed as a Hampden Township Commissioner, the largest municipality in Cumberland County. It has been a truly enjoyable experience, with the highlight being the adoption of my resolution creating a Veterans Recognition Committee to establish a Veterans Memorial in the Township.
Looking back, I would never have guessed how my life has turned out, but I am grateful for the opportunities that college afforded me, the Brothers and friends I met and have stayed in contact with, and the career that I’ve had. Looking ahead, I can’t wait to find out what is in store for me. If any Brother would like to speak with me about getting involved politically, please do not hesitate to email (silcoxn@msn.com) or call (717-649-2085) me. Brother Nate Silcox (’94)
